With spring commissioning complete, it’s time to launch, knowing you’re protected no matter where your boating adventures take you.
At CIB, we work with boat owners across Guernsey and Jersey to ensure their cover is as ready as their craft. Here’s what to consider before setting sail this season.
1. A New Season Brings New Risks
Spring brings changing tides, increased marina traffic, and unpredictable weather – all of which can affect your vessel.
Ask yourself:
- Has your policy been reviewed since last season?
- Have there been changes to your vessel, mooring, or equipment?
- Are you planning to venture further afield this year?
2. Maintenance and Safety Matter – So Does the Paperwork
It’s standard practice to check your engine, hull, electrics, and safety gear before heading out, but your insurance documentation deserves the same attention.
- Have your sums insured been updated to include any upgraded navigation or electrical equipment, new life jackets, dinghies, life rafts etc.?
- Is the Third-Party liabilities limit sufficient in the event of a claim, we would recommend a minimum of £5,000,000?
- Are you towing Water Skiers or Inflatable Toys, if so, has your policy been extended?
- Does your cruising range need extending to cover weekends in neighboring Islands or the adjacent French Coast.?
An annual review is often overlooked, but it’s one of the simplest ways to avoid problems if something goes wrong.
3. Weather, Theft & Liability: Island-Specific Risks
Boating in Channel Islands means navigating some of the most challenging and largest tidal conditions, changeable weather, and busy seasonal waters.
Insurers have seen a rise in claims relating to:
- Storm damage during sudden squalls, especially on vessels on exposed moorings
- Onboard navigation equipment and personal effects theft from unsecured marinas
- Liability disputes following minor collisions
These risks aren’t always covered by standard policies, especially if they’re not designed for Channel Islands waters.
4. Setting Sail with Confidence
With more vessels heading back into the water, spring is the perfect moment to make sure your policy coverage is correct for the forthcoming boating season.
At CIB, our service offers:
