Employee Benefits

Health insurance is a great benefit to offer staff and is a very important employee recruitment and retention tool. Private medical insurance was the second most-valued benefit provided by employers, according to research conducted by group risk insurer Ellipse in 2017. Whether it’s used for recruitment and retention purposes or ensuring those who need care receive it as quickly as possible, healthcare should be a priority.

Presenteeism is where people show up to work while ill, be it mentally or physically, and it could affect their performance in the workplace. Not only can it spread illnesses across the office, but it can also contribute to lost productivity, costly mistakes and the illness or injury could continue longer.

Many of the major medical insurance providers do not fully appreciate the healthcare systems in the Channel Islands, and some of their benefits are not relevant or do not provide cover for basic things such as GP visits, Emergency Department fees or assistance with travel cost were treatment is not available on the island. It is important to choose the right plan for your budget and health requirements.

When dealing directly with an insurer, they may not be aware of the differences and you could be left with a significant shortfall in the event that costs are not covered by their plan.

A properly designed healthcare plan can ensure that employees receive the treatment they need quickly, reducing any time lost due to injury or illness and returning them to work sooner.

Dental

It is increasingly popular for companies to add dental to the benefits they offer to employees. A dental policy compliments medical insurance and can be paid for by the company is there is budget available or by employees via their salary at no cost to the company. Employees can also add family members to the plan and upgrade their level of cover.

Why do we need dental insurance?

It helps cover the cost of dental treatment. Dental fees are unregulated – potentially leading to large bills. Dental insurance helps make treatment more affordable. Having a benefit available for a check up and scale and polish once a year means you are more likely to make and attend an appointment.

Arranging regular check-up's is very likely to prevent the need for expensive emergency treatment further down the line and will reduce unnecessary healthcare expenditure.

Employee Assistance Programme (EAP)

The primary goal of an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) is to maintain and improve the mental health of employees so they can consistently contribute to the growth of the company. EAPs provide support to employees for a multitude of scenarios.

Avoiding Escalation

Work stress can build up over a period of time and can possibly lead to conflict with other employees or even escalate into a violent situation. With an EAP, the employee can seek help during the early stages of a problem, which can prevent it from turning into something more serious.

Personal Issues

An EAP can also help employees deal with issues outside of the workplace that can impact job performance. Many people deal with issues, including substance abuse, depression, marital strife and grief over the loss of a loved one. An EAP provides an outlet to help them resolve these issues, or at least learn to cope with them so they won’t impact job performance.
